Play fair

“That’s not legal,” you say firmly as he tries to take an action with a unit that's advanced.

“Are you sure? I thought—”

“I’m sure. Rule 3.4, page 18.”

He snarls but corrects his move. Minutes later: “That dice roll doesn’t count. You picked it up before I could see it.”

“It was a six—”

“Roll again. In the open this time.”

Each time you call him out, he grows more agitated, more feral. But each time, he complies. Because deep down, even a monster knows the truth: victory through cheating is no victory at all.

The game continues. It’s close. Honest, but close.

Finally, on the last turn, you make your move a legal, fair, honest move that clinches victory.

The Werewolf stares at the table. At his defeat.

Then, something changes in his eyes. The yellow glow fades to something more human.

“You… you beat me. Fair and square.” He sounds almost awed. “I forgot what that felt like.”

And before your very eyes, his transformation reverses. The fur recedes. The claws retract. He stands, now fully human, and extends a hand.

“Thank you,” he says quietly. “I think… I think I can play for fun again.”

VICTORY!

"Awesome!" I say walking over from behind the counter with a cup of tea in hand. "That's saved me a few jobs today."

"Wait a minute!" You say. "Was this just a rouse to get me to do jobs for you? I've risked my very soul here. Don't I get anything in return?"

I finish the tea. Put the wizard hat back on and cough a few times to get my voice ready.

"Very well. You have succeeded in your quest. Therefore you must choose!!!"
